Day 2 of the ride took the riders from Birmingham to Newark which was a stage of just under 83 miles. Along the way passing through a number of counties including the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Derbyshire and ending up in Nottinghamshire.
The start of the day was hot and humid with temperatures rising throughout the morning. A tough start took us along the canal paths which after Birmingham comprised mainly of grass trails, which is really tough to bike on. The days ride didn’t get off tom the best of starts after a few miles we had our first puncture, so there was an early delay. The lunch stop was around 40 miles into the stage and was a welcome relief, with mile after mile of canal path really taking its toll on the riders.
After lunch the route was more manageable with a mixture of non grass canal paths and ending on the road taking us through Nottingham and finally to our stop of the day in Newark. In contrast to the first day from around 3.00pm the weather took a turn and there was heavy rain for the last 3 hours of the ride.
A tough day with contrasts of weather and terrain and everyone was pleased to have finished the days ride, enjoy a hot shower and something to eat before heading to bed to re-charge for the final leg to Mablethorpe.
A special thank you to Margaret fo for providing some extra strong muscle rub, much appreciated after the long ride each day. Thank you everyone that has sponsored us, taken time out to wish us luck on Facebook and supported us on the ride. it really does make a massive difference. Below are a few snaps from today’s stage.
