As the main event draws closer the team have been putting in the mileage to ensure their legs are up for the challenge. This ride took the lads north on the canal network up to Stoke Breurne and then on to the Blisworth Tunnel which forms the first 25 miles of the first 80 mile leg of the challenge towards Birmingham. Riding conditions on the day were fair with plenty of sunshine but still the strong wind which always seems to be a head wind!
The start of the ride from Milton Keynes is good with nice canal side paths which makes for easy riding. However around 15 miles in and 5-6 miles south of Stoke Breurne the riders started to get deep into the countryside and with this the paths became a little less rider friendly. The majority of the path over this 6 mile stretch was actually grass which is nasty to ride on and very energy sapping, and a top speed of around 9 miles an hour for this stretch was all that was possible. Fortunately the first pit stop on the main ride is at Stoke Breurne when the team will meet up with the support vehicle and be able to re stock fluids and make any necessary kit or bike adjustments.
Blisworth Tunnel is not passable to bikes and therefore the ride then takes us off onto the country lanes the otherside of the tunnel and towards Gayton. At this point the main ride would continue to follow the canal network towards Birmingham. On this training ride however a route was plotted to head back via the countryside lanes towards Hartwell, Hanslope, Newport Pagnell and then back into Milton Keynes and around Willen and Caldecotte Lake. Total millage for the ride was 52 miles, 28 miles short of the first days ride length for the main challenge.
Overall this was a good training ride with the varied terrain the riders will come across when taking on the Mablethorpe Charity Bike Ride. Check out below some of the images taken along the route of the ride taking in the many sights that come with the canal side ride.

This will start by catching the train to Birmingham and riding back to Milton Keynes and will be around 80 miles, we will update the blog with details of how this ride went and images along the way. So look out for this.
